What is taking up space NYC?

Taking Up Space NYC (TUS) is a community that brings people together to experience art in ways that feel inclusive, accessible, and collective.

Through weekly gallery hops, museum visits, and curated cultural gatherings, TUS centers underrepresented artists and minority-owned galleries while creating space for connection beyond traditional art settings.

At its core, Taking Up Space is about showing up together, removing intimidation from cultural spaces, and fostering a sense of belonging through shared experience.

FOUNDER & How It Began

Rashida Momoh, founder of Taking Up Space NYC, is a community-focused creative interested in increasing accessibility and equity within the art world. Rashida started hosting weekly gallery hops in the summer of 2025 out of her love of art and desire to connect with other creatives in New York City. The name Taking Up Space arose from the lack of diversity amongst crowds at art galleries and serves as a reminder to all to feel comfortable in any space.

What began as a small group quickly grew into something much bigger, revealing a shared desire for spaces where people feel comfortable, seen, and welcome. Taking Up Space NYC is rooted in the belief that cultural spaces belong to all of us, and that experiencing art together can be a powerful way to build connection, confidence, and community.
